Another fine product not brought to you by Wal-Mart

As if we needed another reason to avoid the mega-blight known as Wal-Mart, here’s another one: Wal-mart’s attempts at stifling women’s autonomy. They are clear about not providing emergency contraception and allow their pharmacists to make their own decisions about whether or not to fill birth control prescriptions. Don’t just take my word for it. I received the following letter today after inquiring about their policies:

Dear Valued Customer,

Thank you for contacting us at Walmart.com regarding women’s prescriptions for birth control. Your comments and concerns are very important to us as we strive to meet your needs. Wal-Mart does not carry emergency contraceptives. Our pharmacists may decline to fill a prescription based on personal convictions. However, they must find another pharmacist, either at Wal-Mart or another pharmacy, who can assist you by filling your prescription. Again, we thank you for your comments regarding this issue.

Sincerely,

Customer Service at Walmart.com

Personal convictions? Thanks, but I’d rather be the one making the decisions about when to procreate, not my pharmacist.

  1. Whoa, that is some messed up shit. Where does a pharmacist get off deciding what medications you are permitted to take. Smells like a perfect opportunity for a lawsuit.
