5:15 pm: We've hit a stopping point. The wood supports under the toilet were rotting out, causing the vinyl to discolor with (ick) mold from below the surface and a distinct spongy feeling when you stepped near the toilet. This had been one of the driving forces for why I wanted to pull out the vinyl and lay down tile. We suspected something wasn't right down there. Now we know something isn't right. We will need to bring in a contractor to repair the wood so we can tile, but that won't happen until at least next week. In the mean time, we may use the opportunity to paint the whole bathroom. The huge downside to this is that we are down to a single bathroom for five people, three of which require frequent bathroom visits and hand washing. Might not want to visit us for a while...
3:13 pm: Update on the update: mold and rotting wood support structures for the toilet are slowing us down already. We've called the condo association manager and our maintenance folks for the condo for advice. It's unclear whether this is our job to fix or the condo's responsibility. See icky pictures below...
2:00 pm: In an unending quest to learn how to do things I probably have no need to know, I am driven by an inexplicable urge to learn how to tile. I have taken on a new project-- tiling our bathroom floor so that I can learn as I go. Here is the before picture, and here is a picture of Chris helping as we begin the demolition phase. We have to remove the vanity and pull out the old flooring first... More pictures to follow as we wade deeper into the project.
