Conversations with Jay

February 2009
On the way to bed one night…
“Mama, mouths always take care of boogers”

March 2009
[Beaming at me from after coming out of the bathroom] “Mama. I peed a little in the toilet and a little out of the toilet!” (We are now working on his aim.)

*****

Daddy: “I love you, Jay”
Jay:
Daddy: “I love you, Jay”
Jay: “… I love Mama”

April 2009
Chris and I were driving past a place where he ran a race in high school. Chris pointed out the track and the fields and as we talked, Jay asked who was watching him and Ella while Daddy was out running. I told him it was before he and Ella were born.

“Well, where WAS I, then?”

“Well… part of you was in mommy and part of you was in daddy”

“Who had my head?”

May 2009
Running with Jay in the stroller we pass a sign with the number two on it. Excited that he recognizes the number and mimicking me as I always try to point out letters and explain how they fit into words, Jay exclaims, “Two, Mama! Two is the first letter in the word ‘cat’, mama!”

At graduation, during the procession as professors filed in wearing maroon hoods and robes of varying colors, Jay turns to Grandma Gavin and points to one of our most senior professors. “What dat purple people doing?”

*****

“Mama, I don’t want to be just born. I want to be big.”

“Why do you want to be big Jay? What would you do if you were a grown up?”

“I want to be big so I could use knives to cut things like grown ups can… and so I can say “oh my God”, like you.”

  1. Oh, how I miss that boy, and the rest of his family. I just saw the graduation video-I've got tears! I'm so sad I missed it. Congratulations again! I love the family picture with Jay wearing your hat.
